Patio Cleaning for Summer

Doing an annual deep-clean to get your patio ready for summer doesn’t have to be difficult. With a few brushes, some basic cleaning supplies and a little work, your outdoor space will be ready to enjoy all summer long.

Patio Cleaning Prep

First, do a little pre-cleaning prep work. Most likely, your patio and furniture are dirty from the winter weather, but it’s still a good idea to check thoroughly for any damage or wear. Pull any weeds and sweep away any dust and dirt that isn’t stuck on. If you have a wood deck, look for any loose boards, exposed nails or splintered wood. If you have a stone or brick patio, make sure there’s nothing wobbling or crumbling. A little bit of sanding or patching will bring your space up to snuff in no time.

Cleaning Your Patio

Now it’s time to get your patio cleaned and ready for fun. Different types of patios may require different methods and supplies, so make sure you’ve got the right tools for the job.

Here’s what you’ll need:

• Garden Hose with Nozzle
• Power Washer (if possible)
• Brush with Stiff Bristles (non-wire) • Dishwasher Liquid
• Degreaser
• Bleach (to mix in a diluted solution) • Waterproof Gloves
• Plastic Tarp
• Plenty of Cleaning Rags

Cleaning a Cement or Stone Patio

If you have a power washer, pick the right setting for concrete or stone. If not, use a garden hose with a strong stream nozzle. Hose your patio down so that all dirt and sediment is removed. If there are any grease or oil spots (usually due to a grill) on the concrete, use a degreaser or dishwashing liquid and your brush to scrub down thoroughly and then rewash with your hose.

To remove any moss, mold or mildew – mix a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water, testing the solution on a small area to make sure it doesn’t discolor your surface. Use waterproof gloves when cleaning with bleach, and be sure to protect grass and landscaping with a tarp.

Cleaning a Paver Stone Patio

This job is much easier, as pavers are usually very low maintenance. Most pavers clean up nicely with just a strong nozzle hose, and maybe a little spot clean on stains with dishwashing liquid and water.

Cleaning Patio Furniture

Patio furniture should get the clean treatment too. Remove cushions and detachable fabric elements, then give a wash with outdoor furniture cleaner or soapy water and a gentle scrub brush. Check for rust or damage on the furniture and tighten any loose screws. Cleaning your outdoor cushions could involve giving them a thorough dusting, but they may be machine- or hand- washable – check tags for the best way to get them clean too.
