Our Year 1 Accomplishments

Ending Hunger

  • 325 million meals to help families in our communities in 2017.
  • Directed $181 million in charitable giving to end hunger in our communities in 2017. Total Kroger 2017 giving: $358 million.
  • Expanded Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Food Rescue to donate more nutritious food to Feeding America-affiliated food banks.
  • Applied data and insights to better understand the complex issue of food insecurity.
  • Planned pilot projects in select communities to test new ideas and technology to improve food security.

Eliminating Waste

  • 77% waste diversion from landfills in 2017.
  • 34 of 36 manufacturing plants are zero waste; 1,978 of our stores participate in food waste recycling, including animal feed and composting.
  • Committed to phase out single-use plastic grocery bags by 2025.
  • Launched a project to simplify date labels on products to help our customers reduce food waste at home.
  • Worked with World Wildlife Fund to establish metrics and a baseline for reducing food waste across our supermarkets.
